Ryanair is urging European authorities to impose a two-drink limit at airports after initiating legal action against a disruptive passenger whose behavior led to a costly flight diversion. The incident occurred on a flight from Dublin to Lanzarote in April 2024, necessitating an unscheduled landing in Porto, Portugal. This diversion affected over 160 passengers and resulted in significant financial losses for the airline, including expenses for excess fuel, lodging, and legal fees.
The airline’s proposal aims to enhance safety and reduce in-flight disturbances by limiting alcohol consumption before boarding. This initiative comes amid a global rise in unruly passenger incidents, with the International Air Transport Association reporting an increase in such cases. In the United States alone, the Federal Aviation Administration received over 2,100 reports of unruly passengers in the previous year, highlighting the ongoing challenge of managing in-flight disruptions.
Ryanair’s call for stricter alcohol regulations at airports reflects a broader industry concern about passenger behavior and flight safety. Implementing such measures could help mitigate risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, ensuring a safer and more pleasant travel experience for all passengers.
